Tom Cruise tests Red Bull F1 car

Tom Cruise Red Bull 2011

Actor Tom Cruise got his first taste of Formula 1 machinery in a secret test that took place with Red Bull in California last week.

In a behind closed doors session on August 15 at the Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond, Cruise was given a day to learn all about the challenges of driving F1 machinery. The event was part of Red Bull Racing’s recent promotional trip to the United States.

Being overseen by Red Bull Racing ambassador David Coulthard, who also logged benchmark laps in the car and helped Cruise compare data between their runs, Cruise was reported to have reached speeds of 181mph around the 2.5-mile track and, over the 24 laps he completed, improved his best time by 11 seconds from the start to the end of the day.

Speaking about the event, Coulthard said: “Tom’s the real deal. I was surprised that he picked it up so quickly and is such an accomplished driver.

“His recall was incredible considering how complicated driving an F1 car is. He’s a guy who really pushes the envelope in real life. This day was not green screened. He thoroughly impressed me.”

I want to be rich and famous too!!!  (And play in fast cars for free!!)

Red Bull wants to develop a Road Car?

Formula 1 team Red Bull Racing wants to be recognized as a serious engineering company away from the racetrack, and plans to use its tie-up with Infiniti to move into road car development.

RBR boss Christian Horner told Autocar he wants to “use Red Bull’s expertise outside F1.”

“Red Bull used to be known only as an energy drink company, but now it is recognized as an engineering team. It’s a natural evolution for us to get involved in road car engineering,” Horner added.

Chief among the Infiniti/RBR plans is a co-developed sports model, although Nissan’s luxury arm has not yet disclosed which car will receive this treatment. Infiniti insiders are already suggesting brand awareness is rising because of the F1 tie-up with Red Bull (which uses Renault engines in its F1 cars, but carries Infiniti branding on the cars) which has been aided by hiring RBR driver Sebastian Vettel as a “global ambassador” for the company.

Following Ferrari and McLaren’s footsteps?   How much Red Bull are people drinking?
